THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down as far as I could
to where it bent in the undergrowth:

then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear:
though s for that passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another  day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less travelled by,

and that has made all the difference.

While activity: Understanding the poem
  1. In your groups discuss the following questions and make short notes on your note-making app
(One note):
  1. What is the difference between the two roads?
  2. Is the persona happy with his choice?
  3. Do you think it was a difficult decision?
  4. What does the poem mean?
  1. Frost uses nature as a background. He usually begins a poem with an observation of something in nature and then moves toward a connection to some human situation." How does this quote help you understand the poem? “Yet knowing how way leads on to way, / I doubted if I should ever come back.”
  2. Explain the meaning of this quote in your own words. Why does the persona say he will “be telling this with a sigh / somewhere ages and ages hence?”

  1. Look at this line from the poem: “Two roads diverged in the wood and I-I took the one less travelled by…” Why does the persona repeat the word I twice? What effect does it have?

Post Activity:
Reflect on what the poem has to offer you by making constructive comments as you  respond to these questions on the classroom blog (collaborative activity)

  4. 2) The quote suggests or portrays the dilemmas of life of human beings.
3)Telling with sigh the persona means that he is relieved and he is free, and the next quote he means at some time in future may be to the grand children who in turn tell the next generation.
    4) Here the persona is emphasising his stand of being the sole decision maker and showing his mood as being jovial.

  7. 2) people consider this their favourite because this poem encourages innovation rather than following what other people have invented for example the persona takes a route less treaded upon!! it encourages exploration and discoveries of new aspects in life this poem would be best used on entrepreneurs not to fear risk taking

    1. The Road not taken I think is talking about the dilemmas in life of human beings, In this case Robert is completely portraying an individual who is at cross roads of the right decision to take, the speaker attempts to take the first route(decision) but it does not work out because it seem to have not been chosen by majority. However,he decides to take the less taken path or idea where he finally succeeds and promises o tell or advise the future generation to always avoid going by the majority but to stick on hje least regarded ideas or decisions in life.
